Chapter 59.
Myrrha led everyone to the room the Tookes had been in earlier while anticipating the elves' arrival, Transporter Control. Waiting for everyone to catch up, Myrrha walked over to the console where Jason had sat earlier that day and switched the screen on.
She then moved a control, bringing up a map of Lorrendar. There were two lines on the map. One was red and ran vertically on the map. The other was green and ran horizontally. "The place where the red and green lines cross is where Jason went, Annabel. If you want, you can travel there and find him." Annabel sharply inhaled. "But, the Mindspin machine doesn't allow you to choose where to travel. It chooses for you... Doesn't it?" Myrrha frowned. "No, at least I don't think so. Let me put these settings in memory and then check what the settings were yesterday, before any of you got into this room." She worked the controls and the screen changed. Now it read
"Oh, my. Well, that explains a lot. You never knew where you were traveling to, and you always returned seven days later. Right?" Annabel nodded. Myrrha looked at Garrett. "This wasn't supposed to be left activated. I wonder how it happened?" He looked puzzled as he thought about it. "I'm wondering if someone may have been down here after we all left? Maybe they set it that way, not realizing what they were doing." He shook his head. "Other than that, I don't know." Garrett looked at the settings. "The freight transport platform in the arena is the one selected as default. That means anyone could have stepped up on it at any time and been transported." He was looking somewhat pale. Myrrha saw the setting he had seen. Reaching forward, she said, "I can take care of that... There, the default is now the unit in the room next to this one." Annabel followed this conversation with interest. "You mean that somebody set the machine to act the way it did? It wasn't designed that way?" Smiling at her, Myrrha shook her head. "No, it wasn't. Apparently Jason figured that out during the short time he was here." She gave a light sigh. "I think I may have enjoyed meeting him. Now, back to my question... Do you want to find him?" "Yes!" Annabel's joy had returned. "Please help me find him!" Ellayne and Kollinn exchanged knowing looks. She really had missed him after all. "Okay." Myrrha stood up and went to a cabinet along one of the walls. She opened it and withdrew a Mindspin key. "This," she said, "is an Automatic Recall Unit. It is what the Transporter will use to bring you back here. Jason had the recall set for sixty hours. I'm going to give you more time than that, say one hundred hours." Myrrha recalled the settings saved to memory, then reset the Recall Interval to one hundred hours. "Watch this. In the event you want or need to come back early, simply press here and here." She pointed to two spots on the unit. "After you press those at the same time and hold them for three seconds, you will be returned here within fifteen seconds." She looked at Annabel. "Do you understand?" Annabel nodded. "Press here and here at the same time for three seconds, and I will be returned here within fifteen seconds." "Perfect. Now, there's something here that will help you find Jason when you arrive." Myrrha reached back into the cabinet and withdrew a small, round, metal device. "This is an Automatic Recall Unit Locator. You can use this to find the unit that Jason has. Observe." She pressed a small button on the side. When she did, the top of the Locator opened, revealing a white face that had a small row of white lights in a circle around its outer edge. Myrrha walked over to the console and pressed a few controls. 49BT88 appeared on the screen. "That's the identification number for the Automatic Recall Unit that Jason took with him when he transported." She held the Locator up in front of the console and pushed a button. When she did, the Locator unit beeped. "Okay, this Locator is now set to find Jason's Unit. If he still has it with him when you find the unit, then you'll find Jason." She gave the Locator to Annabel. "Now, Annabel, here's the tricky part. He set his unit to return in sixty hours. He's probably given himself that long in order to decide if he wants to come back here or not. Which means that you'll have less than that amount of time to find him, since he already has a head start on you. So, the earlier you get going, the better your chances of finding him." Myrrha turned to Garrett. The two of them were carrying on a conversation with each other much more rapidly than people could who merely used words. Garrett gave a slight dip of his head, then turned to Annabel. "We're going to change one thing we told you earlier. You, and Jason if he wishes to return here, are allowed to use the Transporter to travel between your land and his as often as you wish." He added a note of caution. "But please be careful and don't let anyone else see you do so. I suggest that, when you find him, you choose a hidden and inconspicuous place to transport from. Maybe in a house. When you return here, adjust this knob until that screen up there reads Return Coordinates. Write them down. That is where you transported from. If you will then use those same numbers for the Destination Coordinates, you can transport back to the same spot each time. If it is hidden, you should be unseen. Oh, and one final thing. When you are ready to be transported, stand on the platform and say the words 'send now'. Got that? 'Send now' and you'll be on your way." Annabel had listened closely to everything Garrett had to say. Now, she moved up and hugged him tight. "Thank you," she whispered in Garrett's ear. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart." "You're welcome. Promise to give us a screen call when you return and let us know how it turns out?" Annabel nodded, tears of joy threatening to flow down her cheeks. "Excellent. Now, if everyone will excuse us, Garrett and I have a return trip to make." Myrrha stood and walked around to grasp everyone's hand. "Good luck to you all. It has been a pleasure meeting each of you." Without further words, she and Garrett walked into the next room. They departed so unexpectedly and quickly that the Tookes stood there in surprise for almost a minute looking at each other. When Ellayne recovered from her shock and looked through the doorway, the room was empty. "Good luck to you too... And I add my thanks to those of my daughter." |
